My truck's been making a ticking sound since the day I bought it about a year ago, and it's only when the AC's on, does anyone know what it could be and how it could be fixed? It's a 2000 F250 XLT 5.4 also, thanks!
If it is only when the A/C is on, I would say it is in the A/C compressor. Now, the 5.4 will have a a ticking sound from worn cam phasers as it ages, but the noise would be constant while the engine is running.

Thank's, yeah, it only ticks when the AC's on, right when I turn it off it quits, I'll check the compressor in a few
Broken manifold studs cause the dreaded tick as well. Every time another superdury ticks on by me it makes me feel better about my couple broken ones. Lol. Hope it is just your ac.

Well she's pushing around 195,000 so that could be a big possibility
If u dare grab a flashlight and look in the wheel well , then crawl under and look up.
I just checked and surprisingly not one of them are broken off, I think it's the AC, because it quits when I turn it off and starts when I turn it on, that's gotta be it
Did tightening the spark plugs make the ticking stop when the A/C is on??? Doesn't make sense, start looking/listening with a mechanics stethoscope around the compressor. This kind of reminds me of putting a zip-tie around the driveshaft of my buddies truck, it would slap the bottom of the cab when he drove around and freaked him out. He kept saying he was getting a ticking sound when moving and took him forever to find the zip tie.
