Hot engine????
Hey I was just wondering if someone could help me out w a question about my engine? I just purchased a 2011 250 super duty w the 6.7 diesel two days ago and tonight I ran to the store then came straight home. Two hours later I walked out to get something out of it and as I walked by the front of the truck I could feel a lot of heat. I opened the hood and EVERYTHING under the hood was really hot??? Literally every hose and every component was extremely hot. I left the hood open and started the truck. After I ran the truck for about 5 minutes I turned it off and everything had cooled off??? My oil temp and trans temp both were around 154 degrees, is this normal? This is the first diesel I've ever owned so I was just wondering if this was normal or should I be concerned???

It all depends. What was the outside temperature where the truck was sitting? Two hours does seem like a long time, but there are many other factors that need to be considered, such as outside temperature, temperature of the coolant and oil when you shut it down, how windy or not it was where the truck was sitting, etc.

Thanks guys for responding. I took the truck in this morning to the dealership to have it checked just in case. They told me it was normal for the engine to be hot even after a few hours of sitting. The temperature yesterday at the time this happened was around 65 degrees, so not to warm. They also told me that the oil temp should range over 200 normally and the trans fluid around 190 which is where both have been all day today. So that definately made me feel better. Ive never owned a diesel so it kind of took me by suprise last night, kinda scared me at first, but everything looks to be normal. I have to say i LOVE this truck, by far the best truck ive ever owned and im on number 30 with this one. Thanks again for your responses

With modern diesel engines there is a very large BTU output. All diesels make a reasonable amount of heat but not as much as a gasser while under load, but there is a lot of mass to it which holds heat and slowly lets it go to the atmosphere.

When I have towed cross country in 105F+ temps..it gets so hot under there I don't even shut it off till the end of the day.
I pop the hood during fuel stops but leave it running.
I am sure the 6.7 is just the same.

I cant speak to these trucks, but I know on most of my other trucks, the engine keeps warm for a long time, even in the winter. I have always felt it was a benifit of the engines being larger. Means that I go to a resteraunt and come out after and the engine is still warm
