So, not to be combative...

So I was talking to my Dad about this video, and he pointed out that the Bel Air in its day was not known for crash safty... He pointed out it was why his family drove T-birds instead.

The bellair was known for passenger compartment intrusion.

BUT we have most definately come a long way with crash safety.

Yeah I agree, they could have picked a different car to prove their point.

Still, the difference is amazing.

That is amazing Crazy. Even with the additional mass of the Bel Air, that alone did not protect the driver. If anything, the energy was transferred TO the driver. Current crash protection science is all about energy absorbsion and it is clear the engineers have come a long way in understanding how to implement it. That is a cool video.

Here's another example of some amazing engineering:

I've been trying to communicate the idea that mass doesn't necessarily mean more protection since I had a good understanding of physics. That video does more in 1:42 than I could in hours of typing to get that point across. Really great stuff!

Great video, I remember seeing that one a couple of years ago. Another really great example of what modern engineering can do. That Smart could go head-on with a Super Duty at 40 MPH and do just as well. It's important to note that in the full-length clip they mention that a human body could not survive such an impact. The deceleration forces are far to great for that. Even though there was no passenger compartment intrusion everyone in the car would have died.

Had that been from 40 MPH it would have been a drastically different case though, most modern cars are really safe!
