Guys.. I need some help with my “91” Explorer, 5 spd XLT, 4x4. I am the original owner and it has 115k miles, still runs very strong but it has started to develop a problem that I can’t diagnose.
When the engine is warm and in the mid range of the acceleration it has developed a miss and then a surge of power. (Under heavy acceleration no issues) The check engine light will come on intermittently, however it does not come on exclusively when it is having this miss and surge problem. I have used a had-held low dollar code diagnostic tool but have not had productive results. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jeff in NM…OUT

Does it idle smoothly?
Those engines were quite prone to vacuum leaks in between the upper intake and the fuel rail and in between the fuel rail and lower intake.
I would also check the MAF sensor to make sure it is clean. If you do a search on here you'll find instructions for cleaning the MAF.
Guys, Thanks for the direction... and ... No, I have not checked the fuel pressure, I will give it a look...and...Yes, it idle's smooth...very smooth. Thx again, Jeff...OUT
