i have an a problem with my van which i have owned for about 6 years.
it just does not have very good accelerator response,i have just put up with this for years because it was a backup vehicle.
it also didn't pass our emission test for the first time(hydrocarbon)
i would like to solve these problems because i will have use it for a while since my dodge van blew up.
i need a direction to start looking.......my experience is in diesel trucks and i'm a little lost on older efi systems.....thanks!
Pull the codes then clear them, do a compression test, check the vacuum at idle, and make sure the timing is 10°BTDC. Next, get a Haynes manual and test each sensor with a multimeter. Make sure your vacuum system is hooked up like the map on the emissions sticker & not leaking anywhere, and tune it using the procedure printed there.
i didn't pass the e check again and then i started to make some checks and everything led back to the timing!
i had to borrow a timing light from a friend and the timing was right on the mark that i had set last year.......this is where it gets interesting......i set the timing about 20 degrees btc and tested and got a lot of throttle response back but i noticed an octane pick when accelerating,i can tolerate the slight ping,but what i want to know is that a sign of burning fuel better which is what i am felling on the emission check..............i am at the point where it now cost me for every failure of the test........thanks again wes!
