I would post this in the 73-79 truck section but there are more r-tards and *******es over there than there are in here. Besides, I usually get infractions when I venture outside of the Offroad forum.
Do any of you have a wiring schematic for a 73-79 truck? Ive got the Ford shop manual but it doesnt include colors. I basically want to know what wires do what -ie red with an orange stripe is the hot side for the factory flame thrower and etc.
What alternators are you running? Im thinking 1 or 3 wire and 100+amp. Im ditching my factory alternator and voltage regulator crapola. It seems Ive read Taurus alternators are popular but Im looking for first hand knowledge.

i have found the easiest alternator to use for a non high current demand vehicle is the gm one wire like was used in the 80's and 90's.
battery positive to the battery post, field wire goes to the hot side of the ignition switch, and the third wire is for an idiot light. start the engine, rev to 800-1200 rpm and the field energizes and charges the battery.

Aiiiight. Pretty much any GM truck or car? Like a 95 Z71 with a 350?
Would it have to go to the battery or could it go to the starter solenoid? Heres why...the battery is in the bed and Im already running 1/0 wire to the solenoid which is now mounted inside the cab with bulk head connecting it through the firewall.
Damn...it looks like trying to eliminate as many underhood wires as possible is causing me to use more wires than I had in the first place. :-(

OK, looking at Napas website...
There were several amp size alternators. The 37, 42 and 55amp alternators are cheap (like $50) but the 100-140amp versions are all over $200. Before I spend that kind of money on a factory unit Ill just buy something aftermarket.
Any ideas?
BTW, heres the way Im running my wires. Paint FTW!

3g is what is coming to mind with the alternator. Search FSB, and I may have made a thread here in the offroad section, or at least asked about it somewhere and received some good info on it. I haven't upgraded yet though. You could also take your stock one to a shop to have it rebuilt and beefed up for brazillions of amperators.
i got the first msg that he was burning a goat and automatically figured it was his lover and that he caught it cheating on him and killed it in a fit of jealous rage. he claims otherwise. i'm not buying it. either way i told him to sell it to some ......., profit $$$$.
