new engine

Ok so on my last post I explained how my 4.0 sucked up water and with very much help I was able to find out the motor is trash. So right now I have a 96 explorer 5 spd 4.0. I can get either engine right now 4.0/5.0 I would very much like to put a 5.0 in it. My question is can my 5 speed transmission hook to a 5.0. Would there be any compatibility problems?

If you are getting from a junk yard they should be able to tell if it interchanges or now. Worst case is you would have to change the bell housing so it is compatible.

Too bad about the motor, but that happens with so much water.

Yea its a crappy situation but stuff happens. And I had it uninsured because I was driving another vehicle so my insurance didn't cover it. But I figured if I need to put a new engine in it why not go bigger. And I'm.getting it from the u pull yard and I have them holding both vehicles for me. But if you guys think if anything they I would run into please let ne know

The 4.0 bell and the 5.0 bell patterns are different. A 5.0 will not bolt to your trans. The 5 speeds and automatics used in these have integral bellhousings, so no bell change.

Do you have smog inspections in your state?

If you are clear to switch to the 5.0, you will need the engine and trans plus probably mounts, exhaust, radiator, all the accessories or at least the mounts for AC and PS, throttle cable, shifter connections, driveshaft, maybe cross member..... Anything that's different. So when you are "shopping", you need to have pics of your vehicle to see what's different.

IMO, another 4.0 would be the way to go. This is a 15 year old vehicle, how much money do you want to spend on it when you can buy a newer one with the 5.0 in it running for not a lot of money--$5 to 8,000 according to a search I did here.

Very valid points and I thank you for those. I was thinkin get the 5.0 new computer, harness, exhaust and rad. But yea ill probably just go with the 4.0 its only 110 dollars for the engine and Im putting it in my self and putting all new gear on it while its in a stand before it goes in

those certainly are things to consider. It may just be better to stick with the current type of motor to hold down the cost.

Yea i mean I'm not very worried about the cost but that's alot of work for the 5.0. I would just get another explorer but I already put so much work and money into this one. Thank you very much for the info
