charging?

when i turn my lights on my ammeter goes toward the discharge side. is this normal?
also when i run it the alternator doesn't get hot.
are these signs that it isn't charging?

charging?

Use a voltmeter and check across the battery terminals with the engine running. It should read between 13 and 14.5 volts.
