engine oil in radiator coolant

My engine on my 2006 f250 6.0 diesel over heated today. When I popped the hood a gray almost claylike substance was erupting out of my radiator resevoir. Once I calmed down and came to my senses and looked the situation over, I checked my transmission and engine oil levels. The transmission was fine however the engine oil didn't even read on the dip stick.
Before I take my truck to the shop, any advice on what is causing this so that I don't get reamed to bad at the shop?

The oil cooler popped sorrey man that sucks DO NOT DRIVE IT

most get some gauges to watch our EOT vs ECT temp spread

the oil cooler has two sides the coolant side and the oil side
what happens is the coolant side of the oil cooler plugs up with casting sand, coolant silicate fallout from extreme temps of the egr cooler
most of us flush our coolant system regularly and add a coolant filter

how HOT did it get

and welcome to FTE

EGR cooler and oil cooler need to be replaced. I would do some research and try to attempt to fix it yourself if you are somewhat mechanically inclined, otherwise its going to cost you $1000+ for this repair

Thanks for the reply. I was actually pulling my boat this morning when it happened. I started smelling something and looked at my gauge and watched it rise. Just before the needle reached the red, I pulled over, never cut the engine off and it cooled back to normal. I had a few more miles before I got home and it did fine. Once I raised the hood, holy crap, I flushed a huge pile of this gray clay like matter out of my radiator. After researching a litle, realized what it was and checked my engine oil and it was low, knowing then what was happening. I just want to make sure when I take it to the mechanic that I know somewhat of what is going on.

When these 6.0L trucks were under warranty, if one were to land on my doorstep, I would've put an approval request in for a long block, and EVERYTHING coolant passes through (heater hoses, radiator, heater core etc.) if pulling the lower rad hose revealed a grey mud like consistency coming out. The reason being, once it bakes to the cylinder walls, you would never be able to flush it all out 100%. However, if you're out of warranty, the expense of such a repair may not be reasonable or realistic. That said, you may want to request to have the system flushed out in the manner outlined in one of the TSBs, along with having the EGR and oil coolers replaced of course. Once all said and done, a coolant filtration system added may DEFINITELY be in order here.

well if you have a warrenty left might as well use it

If not alot alot of people have done it in there driveway

Im getting ready to do it myself I have the oil cooler and some other stuff ready to go in
as far as cost it is expensive to pay someone to do it but its buried down under the oil filter and the intake manafold has to come off so they do earn it IMO

since it is an 06you may want to explore your options as far as a upgraded EGR cooler to a BPD one or deleating it

and your supposed to change the hoses after oil contamination in the coolant system

replace oil cooler, all hoses, water pump, degas cap, degas tank, t-stat. flush the cooling system with simple green.
give soem thought to replacing the heater core and radiator too. I would suggest it.

This is my biggest fear, I have a new oil cooler in my garage and have been too lazy to take the time to put it in. (already deleted the egr cooler, byt didn't know any better to swap the oil cooler)
Cheezit - can simple green be used for a coolant flush or use just in this situation, and do use the ford gold coolant or do you have a different preference for coolant??

dimple green is great for this. so is cascade. we use either. I perfer simple green. you can use simple green anytime you flush the cooling system but it is not a substuite for vc-9 they are for dofferent things.
I myself use ford gold. lots of people opt for the shell elc.
I have not swiched because ford gold is basicly free if I save all the left overs to make full gallons.
