I found what was causing my 2000 to skip a beat here and there under load! I couldn't believe it butt my fuel bowl heater was causing my issues! I unplugged it and no more problems. Has anyone had this problem? No wonder it would not show a code, it was a intermittent dead short to ground and it finally blew a fuse and that's how I found it!!
Nice find! its amaizing how the "little"things can cause so much grief. Usually when the heater comes loose and starts shorting out, the truck just dies. Blown #30 fuse is a common no start around here.
Something doesn't add up here, the fuel heater should not be energized once the motor is at operating temperature. It seems to me, that you may still have a problem.

I talked to the po and she says they have had the same fuse blow in the past so this has been going on for more than a year! And good point, the fuel bowl heater should not be on when the truck is warm?????? I drove 170 miles yesterday and it ran perfect. Need to get a wiring diagram to see how that circuit works. If the circuit supplies constant 12v+ to the bowl and switches the ground, a short is still possible!!
Your thinking is right on. One pin on the WIF/Fuel Heater connector has 12 volts present with key on. Next time you change the fuel filter remove the fuel heater element and plug in the connector if you want the WIF sensor to work.
The fuel bowl heater plug is also for the water in fuel sensor also? Does anyone know exactly where the bowl heater relay is located? I would like to find the relay so I can be sure it's the heating element thats bad. Will having the fuel bowl heater disconnected in the winter cause me any problems? I do live west of the Chicagoland area out in the country so it does get cold and windy!
When looking at my 2000's wiring diagrams, I don't find a relay for the fuel bowl heater, and it seems to be wired straight "on" anytime the key is in Start or Run.
It is supplied by Fuse #30, which is a 30-amp in the under-dash Central Junction Box.
I believe you may be thinking of the Air Inlet Heater relay. Not the same thing.
Pop,
I think you got me!
It's hard to imagine that the fuel heater is running all the time! Isn't there some sort of temperature sensor to control the heater?

Isn't there some sort of temperature sensor to control the heater?
No there's not, and that's just plain stupid on Ford's part!
Hey! We COULD rig up a new electrical mod!
Y'know, when you think about it, extra current that's unnecessarily used has to get generated, and that uses energy (fuel). We could call it a "fuel economy mod".
Man, I LOVE this forum. We cause each other to THINK!
EDIT:
Remove existing wire from fuel heater and cap off.
Run wire with an in-line fuse from AIH to fuel heater.
The AIH only comes on when extreme cold demands it, which should be about the same condition that the fuel heater is needed.
OK, now, whatta' we gonna CALL IT? Gotta' have a name!

Is the fuel bowl heater supply harness a good source of power for most any relay to control 12v add-on's? On and off with the ignition switch.
Pop,
In my case, since I removed the AIH the fuel heater mod might work fine. In order for the mod to work for everyone else the total load of the AIH and The fuel heater could not exceed the raring for the existing wire or current rating of the contactor and fuse.
