Just curious what others are doing to fight high fuel prices. Main reason I have my truck is for going to the lake with boating. Kinda takes the fun out of it when you have to spend $100 for diesel and I have a V8 ford motor on my boat that likes to drink gas. I'm considering storing the truck at the lake but not sure how to keep the battery charged up (no electric). BTW our round trip is about 350 miles to the lake. I have both the boat and 5th wheel trailer stored at the lake now. Guess I just need to find a job making more money.
I just booked a camping trip in a week on distance. Trying a new place closer to home then the farther away place we normaly go to. Also, going for longer camping trips with fewer trips planned.
I bought a little 15' smokercraft last year and got rid of my big boat, fits my needs good and with a 15hp 4 stroke, I can go all day on 3-4 gallons.
Keeping the battery maintained is pretty easy with a solar 12v panel that you can plug into the lighter port.
I have a commuter car ( '95 BMW 525i ) that I drive. At 28-30 mpg it does good for the 100 mile round trip. I used to have a Geo Metro 3cyl, but driving an hour each way was a little uncomfortable with the junk seats they use.
Fuel prices are getting painfully expensive and when operating a boat it goes fast.
X2 on the solar charger, but throw some mothballs in the valley and in the cab if you leave the truck at the lake.
The good news is crude oil took a nose dive yesterday and is still below $100 / barrel today so prices at the pump should drop a bit in the next week or two.
My truck is my daily driver. I've run over 420 gallons of diesel thru it in the past three weeks....in the neighborhood of $1700 in fuel while working.
It sure takes alot out of my bottom line, but I have to survive doing what I do, and sometimes that means I have to give a little to make a little.
I Have thought about getting a Civic or something economical to do my running around in, but after I factor in the cost of buying a car, paying for insurance, gas, maintenance, ect. I might as well just spend the money on diesel fuel.

I bought a little beater '94 Saturn wagon with a 5 speed that's returning a hair over 30 mpg so far. I'd like to get a new, even more fuel efficient car but that would require financing and I'm not sure it would be worth it for another 10 mpg.

While that's not exactly bad new, worldwide there is no shortage of crude oil or refined fuel and demand is actually down. The big problem is that our inept government is destroying the dollar. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't look for it to get much better anytime soon.

I think a lot of people are taking fewer trips or staying closer to home. I wish I had a smaller engine!

Hope the dog heals up. Hate to see animal suffer!

I would probably be storing indoors because I wouldn't want stuff stolen but good idea about the solar. I could store it outside for cheaper maybe I will just fish in the local irrigation ditches.

I guess you just have to pass on costs when you can....My V6 mustang has been getting some bad mileage. It's about the same as my truck. IDK what's up with it.
I'd get a smaller vehicle to drive but can't afford to cause of fuel costs. Its one of those nice catch 22 things. It wouldn't hurt so much if I fixed the damn exhaust leak thats sucking up 2mpg.
My daily driver is a 1981 VW Rabbit Pickup 1.6 n/a diesel. Gets about 42mpg calculated. It has a 15gallon fuel tank, so I can actually get 600 miles before fill ups. I drive the Power stroke when I need to tow the boat to go fishin. I worked for 38 years at large telcom before retiring, so I could have the time and a few bucks to enjoy life a bit!

I looked at a few of those. VW did not make an extended cab version that i know of. Cab space is just too short.
It is sad that all of the small diesel trucks available in the USA are 80's vintage vehicles.
If it would ever stop raining, the motorcycle would be the transportation of choice! Untill then the DP on stock and easy on the skinny pedle and limit idleing.

Splice the wiring and extend it to leave the panel outside. That or buy a battery maintainer that plugs into a 120v outlet. If nothing else, pull the batteries out of the truck and take them home with you so you can keep them maintained. Just don't forget them when you go back and get the truck.

I haven't figured out how to take it easy on the skinny pedal yet!
