im normally on the 6.0 forum because thats what i drive. but anyways i am needing a programmer for our 7.3. i need a programmer and not chip. reason why i cant use chip is because our workers will mess with it and i dont want that. i just want to download a tune into the pcm and go. that way they can mess with it. what do you guys recommend. i know the sct is good for 6.0 but what about the 7.3. thanks!!
DP Tuner (sponsor of this site and forum) can flash your PCM with a single tune. I am not aware of a "programmer" they have, but you can send the PCM to them and they'll flash it.
Another (formerly) popular solution was Hypertech programmers. I had one before my DP Tuner, and was not a big fan of it, but it's fairly mild overall.
Some of us use a Diablo Sport.. Works great..4 different tunes, transmission firmness shift options, and a it is great scanner for fault codes..See: Diablo Sport Predator Programmer U7170
SCT has an open spot you can store aftermarket programs on. I know Tony can burn a tune on an SCT and I believe Jody can too. Seems like I've heard Bill can tune an Edge programmer (go figure).
Are you going to add gauges, use the programmer for gauges, or just go with a safe mild tune? If you don't trust them to not flip a switch on a chip, then I wouldn't trust them to monitor the gauges and abide by the parameters. In that case your best bet would be an off the shelf unit that's programmed to add just a little power, but keep the parameters in check.
yea i just want a safe tune. i was refering to an off the shelf tuner. just dont know which one. like i said i run the sct on my truck so im real familiar with them. other than that i dont know. i cant afford to send the pcm off either being that the truck runs every day. i know they wont watch the gauges so im not going to bother with that either. ill check it at first with my sct being that i have the touch screen and watch it. i will make sure its safe before i give them the keys. like i said just need a good off the shelf tuner
The off the shelf ones seem to be fairly similar. Edge tends to cause rough shifts and Banks is overpriced. If you're familiar with SCT, I'd suggest you stick with them.
A couple of things to keep in mind for the 7.3. It's advised you install an aftermarket tranny cooler to keep the tranny temps down. The 4R100 isn't as robust as what you're used to. Also installing a modified valve body or a shift kit will firm up the shifts and help the tranny last a little longer also. Our stock air filter system sucks. The airbox tends to warp and allow dirt past the filter which is of course bad for the turbo and engine so keep an eye on how clean the intake tube to the turbo is and switch intakes if necessary.
Good news is no stiction issues with the injectors. No VGT problems. No EGR problems.
haha that is true. i talked with matt at gearhead to see if he can write me a few custom tunes on a sct so he is checking into that. we have had a 7.3 in our fleet a while ago until a lady hit it head on. so i was plannin on changing the intake. also straight pipe to help out egts. tranny temps have been great and i run BG tranny fluid anyways and it runs way cooler than the ford stuff. not to worried about that. although i wish i could put a 5r110 in it. those things are awesome!!!
