Just a thought, pulled the dipstick and it smelled burned.
Was your brother's a 4R100 also? What parts did he use when he rebuilt his? I installed a billet triple disc TC, 300M input shaft, upgraded coast clutch drum, dual load center support housing, increased count clutch packs, TransGo VB and pump mods, and a few other things that aren't included in kits. I purchased parts from different vendors and put them together to form my own package. Let me know if you decide to go that route. I'll try to steer you in the right direction.

Mueckster I am his brother, I rebuilt my 4R100 with a kit off ebay. Nothing special, just new seals and packs. In hind sight I should have beefed it up a bit. So if you could help us out we would appreciate it.

You could do a lot for the trans' longevity by adding a Sonnax Sure-Cure kit when you put it back together .

See: http://www.sonnax.com/system/instruc...4R100HD-IN.pdf

They've been in business for a long time, and really know their stuff.

When that day comes, mine will not be going back together without it.

Also see Roland's advice in Post #16 above! He's one of the two guys I'm going to lean on very hard for advice someday.

This is why I've come to enjoy this forum so much. Read this on a whim, found a way to fix my loosey goosey shifter, mueckster helping out a fellow gear head with first hand knowledge.

Thanks for the links Alan!

Thanks for the PM Roland, (Reps sent). I am going to talk to him about the price in a bit, like most people we are trying to get the best bang for his buck. This does look to be the most cost effective way though. Did you do anything to your valve body when you rebuilt yours, or was the stock good enough? Again thanks for the info, we might be dropping you a line here soon.

I installed the E4OD-HD2-D TransGo VB kit. It is similar to the 4R100-HD2 Tugger kit, minus a few mods. I added some additional steel TransGo accumulator valves, a Sonnax L/R HD Modulator Sleeve Kit, and Sonnax .427 Line Pressure Modulator Valve (instead of doing the kit mods to the stock one). I also drilled out the hole in Lower Valve body spacer plate (pic in the Photobucket gallery) to speed up forward clutch application in Drive.

Do you recommend that I build it up or just rebuild it to stock specs. I occasionally haul a few cars throughout the year and my 26' boat to and from the lake.

I know of a site 4R100 Rebuild Kit Super Heavy Duty 1998 & Up 4 Wheel Drive Regular And Super Duty (Gas & Diesel) :: 4R100 ---- E4OD4R100.COM :: Ford Rebuild Kits :: Pro-Built Automatics where you can get a quality "stock plus" rebuild kit that pretty much has all that you would need for a solid rebuild. Just add a TC and you'd be set. I haven't purchased anything from them, but the parts in their kit are name brand stuff. I would add a 4 disc coast clutch drum and dual load center support for towing and longevity.

The link, I posted, shows the kit for a 4WD. They offer the 2WD for another $10 more.

Racer x sells heavy duty rebuild kits as well and you can get triple disc converters from them also. Just another option
