I'm replacing the rear main seal in my 78 f150, 4x4, 351m. I'm down to the crank, got the bottom half of the seal off. All the crank cap bolts are loosend 1/2-1 in(enough for it to drop) and I can't get the dang thing to budge at all. I've pulled on it, tried prying it, and it just won't budge. I'm I missing something? What do I need to do to get the crank to drop down enough to get the upper seal out?
I take it that you are doing it in place. That is a pain. If you have let off all the caps, it is either each end or it may be hung up on the thrust bearings in the middle of the block. Tighten up the bearing caps so there is only a little clearance and remove the center thrust face bearing cap completely for access and then give it a go.
OH NO Craig!!! I hope the crank didn't fall on him LOL But seriously, i fyou do as was suggested the crank will drop far enough to get at the top half of the seal. THAT'S one tough job to try and do from under a vehical!! good luck to you. John
