i have a 77 ford f100 swb it had a 302 that was built up a little and i had the 3+1 tranny behind it an never had a problem i blew up the 302 an bought a 400 thats built up an i threw a granny 4 spd behind it. i hate the granny 4 spd i lose alot of headway going from 2nd to 3rd. i want to know if the 3+1 tranny will hold up to the 400 and if it will what are the common problems it could have in my lil pickup. i was gonna go to an auto i just dont have the cash especially since i am gonna lower it now.
since its a manual i figured i can just unbolt my bellhousing an bolt it right up. like the granny 4 spd i got was off a old inline 6 i just bolted my 400 bell housing to it. no problems didnt change anything it went right back in
Is it an iron case or aluminum? If it's iron, in good condition bearing wise, it should be good if you don't lean on it too much. No side-stepping the clutch, no bang shifts, and easy on 4th gear.
It should bolt up just like the other trans did. Double check input length, but other than that, it should bolt right up.
If it's aluminum cased, it probably won't last long behind a 400.
thanks. yeah its an iron case it was in my 77 ford when i got it with a 302 i beefed up i never had a problem with it. all i ever did was roast tires if i race its just in town stop light to stop light. im also hoping it helps me get a lil better gas mileage when i put it in an my 3.55 gears. though with a hoped up 400 mileage isnt gonna be expected anyways i shootin for 12mpg.
