Unhappy *repost :/* 351w Distributor Issues

*totally newbie here didn't mean to put this in the bronco thread.. this is a more fitting home*

Just got myself a project Bronco recently from a junk yard. Everything is in tip-top condition, save for the fact that the distributor is missing. Finally found the right on that matched my engine, sadly enough though, I have never installed a distributor on anything. I have searched tutorials online and consulted my Chiltons, and I am still rather confused/not confident of my installation.

I need to find my TDC, which i understand how to do, save for one thing, I'm not sure if my cam shaft as a timing notch for no.1 fire slot to line up on the distributor. I lined as much stuff as a I could and after putting together the distributor, the rotor was rather uncomfortably close to the Number 6 spark terminal, which happens to be on the on the opposite side of the firing order

I know my firing order.

I got a remanufactored distributor that has a few distinct marks as follow.

A pink dot above a gear tooth on the distributor gear.

A blue dot near the pink dot.

A green/yellow dot on a tooth on the aramature

Another blue dot on the assembly housing.

Im not sure what these means I was hoping that someone could help me make sense of this and also give me some step by step in laymen's terms.

Help would be much appreciated.

i think the colors are what materials things are made of. I think my iron gear has green paint on it. The way i time a engine is to pull the #1 spark plug, turn the motor over until you can tell its on the up compression stroke pushing air out of the plug hole. If your harmonic ballancer is good allign the indicator on the block with the 10 btc mark. put your distributor in pointing at the number one plug wire. now with the spark plug removed from the engine plug it back into the wire and lay it on the intake manifold, turn the key on and you should be able to turn the distributor until you see the plug spark, you should now be really close to 10 deg btc. re-install the plug and wire, slightly tighten the distributor clamp down bolt then try to fire up the engine. from there i would use a timing light to verify your timing and the fully tighten the clamp down bolt.
hope this helps.
