Just got myself a project Bronco recently from a junk yard. Everything is in tip-top condition, save for the fact that the distributor is missing. Finally found the right on that matched my engine, sadly enough though, I have never installed a distributor on anything. I have searched tutorials online and consulted my Chiltons, and I am still rather confused/not confident of my installation.
I need to find my TDC, which i understand how to do, save for one thing, I'm not sure if my cam shaft as a timing notch for no.1 fire slot to line up on the distributor. I lined as much stuff as a I could and after putting together the distributor, the rotor was rather uncomfortably close to the Number 6 spark terminal, which happens to be on the on the opposite side of the firing order
I know my firing order.
I got a remanufactored distributor that has a few distinct marks as follow.
A pink dot above a gear tooth on the distributor gear.
A blue dot near the pink dot.
A green/yellow dot on a tooth on the aramature
Another blue dot on the assembly housing.
Im not sure what these means I was hoping that someone could help me make sense of this and also give me some step by step in laymen's terms.
Make sure you can see the oil pump drive shaft in the hole first. #1 is marked on the distrbutor cap there is a 1 right next to the post use a marker to transfer the position to the distributor. You can bring the engine around by hand and to find the compression stroke hold your thumb over the spark plug hole on the compression stroke it will push your thumb or finger away. Then all you need to do is find the spot where the dist. drops in easily at then pull it up and advance one tooth CCW at a time repeating till you line up with the #1 on the cap. Then all you'll need to do is fine tune the timing once you get it up and running.
