So I got the speedometers cable changed, borrowed a speedometers for a while, and the thing still wont work. I can pull the end out of the transfer case(np208) twist the cable and get feedback, but when its in the case I get nothing. So I am assuming there is either a gear that is supposed to be on the end of the cable, or a gear in the transfer case that is either stripped or completely gone.
How difficult is it to pull the end off of the transfer case and see what's up? Is it just drop the shaft and unbolt it, or more involved?? Any help would be appreciated
Its a 86 F150 with a manual 4 speed w/granny and a NP 208. Thanks all.
The piece where the cable attaches to the transfer case comes out. Take the cable off the transfer case, and then look around the cylinder thing with the threads, and there should be a retaining bolt. Take this out and pull the cylinder thing out, and you will see the plastic gear on the end.
No gear was on the end of the one I changed out, I am picking a new gear up from the stealership tomorrow. Is it just as simple as putting the gear on the end of the cable go, or is there some way of attaching it to the cable? I got a mirror and could see the blue gear on the output shaft of the transfer case, thank God its in good shape. I have only had the truck a few weeks now, its not in that bad of shape though just a few minor problems. Any help is appreciated.
I am assuming the original pinion gear is down in the transfer case on the output end, will everything be ok with it in there or should I try to get it out?
