PMS begins

It started with finding that I lost 20 hp on the dyno emission test this year. I figured it was boost or fuel, or both.

So, I tightened all the underhood boost-related clamps.

Which led to a simple cleaning of the clogged EBPV tube.

This led to seeing bubbly fuel out of the drain bowl when the truck was running - which led to the Hutch mod (which makes it sound so much better!)

This led to an underhood fuel pressure gauge, which reads a steady 60 psi at idle.

This led to a custom fuel filter setup back by the tank using an old remote oil filter base and a CarQuest 86393 spin-on diesel cartridge filter ($12).

This led to seeing that the fuel bowl drain valve was now dripping (due to using it so much during all this), which led to replacing the O-rings in the valve with the kit from dieselorings.com

All the great articles and comments on this site (and Guzzle's) have been a lifesaver. I must get a boost gauge to see where my boost is at, and that MBRP exhaust is looking pretty good, now, too. For the Hutch mod, I recommend buying a kit - I did it the hard way, buying my own parts.

Conclusions - not sure if I have any more power, but the idle sounds much better, I know I have fuel pressure (at least on the unfiltered bowl side) and I know my fuel is not hugely full of air. I'm having fun, too.

I 'd post photos, but I don't see how - it appears that I may not post attachments.

Steve

Glad to hear you've become infected. It's OK, you'll live. Really live! Ha!

I highly recommend upgrading your intake to either a Tymar DIY type intake or the Ford AIS, and do a high pressure oil crossover hose ($75). The HP/X will quiet down the engine as well, and make it run smoother.

I'm thinking about a 6637 air filter and a FRx - they seem like solutions to real problems. I do not like mods that introduce any unreliability or major complexity. I only drive this truck as a tow rig, so I don't put a ton of miles on it, and therefore, putting big $$ into mods isn't really in the plans, either. Tranny was rebuilt already, but has very soft shifts (ugh!)

I have a few old Land Cruisers, a '58 Massey 50 tractor, and a Ch*vy plow truck to tinker with, and all could absorb about all my extra vehicle money!

Thanks for the suggestions to help suck the savings account dry!
