On my 01, it was due to corrosion on the switch contacts that was causing it to not come on when the parking brake was applied.
I removed the switch (one screw and a push-on connector) and cleaned up the contact surfaces (they're all exposed). Slipped a clean washer on the screw and remounted it. Works like a charm now.
At least this switch was simple to get to. On my old 97 F150, you had to remove the parking braked pedal mechanism to get to the switch. This one just took a nut-driver.
