I have just bought a.78 bronco and it has a 77 Lincoln 460.
They fan is a quarter inch from hitting the radiator.

Can this be from a faulty waterpump?

Check the pump by trying to move it up, down, all around but usually they will leak when they start going bad. If the motor mounts are home made they may have set it to close. Take a look at the spacer between the water pump and the fan blades. Is it two or three inches long? You can get a shorter one if that's the problem.
