i recently invested in a 77 f-250 custom, it has the 400 and i would like to improve it a little bit. i already replaced the timing chain, and im going to switch it to a 4 brl with a holley 650. my question lies in the cams. i want to upgrade the cams but dont want to do alot of other mods to it. i put higher lift cams on it do i need to change anything? what should i look for in new cams for lift and duration? any comments and hints would be great, thanks for checkin it out.

To answer yes, No and or maybe to all of the above.
You really need to set goals and a budget for what you arewanting out of your vehicle. What your useage and what performance leval you want out of it determines which cam would be the right cam.
some cams don't need much if any other parts some will need quite a bit.
the ultimate goal is to have good work truck and weekend bogger. the cams would (hopefully) be the only other upgrade i do to the engine. any suggestions on cams?
If your wanting to drive it and play also, changes things. Gonna need to bump up the compression. this will help with crisper throttle response and power. But now cam selection is another situation. I use www.MPGheads.com for my cams. Ignition upgrades are another thing. MSD ignition is excellent upgrade. If you don't want to up the compression work ignition and carb/intake for now. Keep lift on cams below .500 lift with factory valve springs. If upgrading cams more than .500 lift coilbind will be a issue. Might get lucky and no binding but this seems to be where you need to start changing things. Comp cams has a 268high energy is a good cam to look at for starting out. Every good cam will give some reccomendations on compression and headers and other related componets. I've ran this cam is several engines but I upgraded valvesprings with this cam. I now run mpgheads and haven't looked back. good luck and 400 has some good potential!! currently building a 400 ford cobrajet headed engine.
