So guys...I seen Zakk having his issues with his rear diff. I have a rear diff leak, its just kind moist around the drain plug, its coming from the bottom six bolts or so, think if i just re-torque them I will be ok? Or should I add something to the outside to remedy the problem? My MRAP had a serious leak when we were on a mission and it was dripping constantly...we threw silicone around the outside of the bolts and it stopped it til the seal completely blew out and was leaking out of the top of the axle(axle replacement followed from warped metal) But I have also seen if i just back one bolt out at a time and clean it out then throw silicone on it as I put the bolts back in I will be ok? Im up for any ideas(Im saving all these posts in my favorites when I get home lol)
Why not pull the cover and repair the leak the correct way? It only takes about a good hour or so, plus you'll be putting fresh oil in.
Basically; I drained it, cleaned the cover and housing very well, put the gasket and diff cover on together, got a few bolts started then did the rest, snugged them all slightly tight, then went in a opposite pattern for the final torquing, pulled my VSS sensor and added 3 quarts of fluid and was done. Hasn't leaked since.
If your differential cover is rusty like mine was, The fluid could be coming slowly through there. I replaced my gasket the proper way with the old cover and it wasn't the seal, it was coming from the cover itself. So I then replaced the cover and the gasket and my problems are solved, no more leaks. The cover is only like 12 bucks, just do it and be happy.
hmm. Mine has rust on it. But its not that big of a leak, My little brother said he could see the bead of oil from the seal, but I will check that out and see what i can do. And I forgot to mention. My transfer case has a leak where the driveshaft comes out, the little round seal(dont know what its called exactly).
I too would just reseal it. I always use black RTV to seal it, as I have had lots of problems with gaskets leaking. Most vehicles never had a gasket to begin with anyways.
Your x-fer case leak could just be the output saft seal. Pull the shaft off use an impact to take the nut off then the yoke should slide off, pull the old seal, install the new one and put the yoke back on and tourqe to 130ftlbs. Takes about a half hour
