I have a 1991 "F Super Duty" with the 7.3, I have been using Mobile Delvac 15W-40 until today, I am trying the Valvoline "Premium Blue" 15W-40 and was wondering if anyone has used this oil before and what kind of performance they saw from it?
The only reason I switched was price, the Valvoline was on sale at NAPA, so a case was $20 cheaper than the Mobile
I used valvoline for a while, no difference in engine behavior. Now I use 5-40 mobil and it does start a little easier and runs slightly quieter - hardly noticeable.
This is the longest, most accurate and easy to understand oil description essay I've ever read. I'm not done yet, but learned a TON in the 6 chapters that I did read.
While the information above is fantastic(not only for diesel, but gassers and motorcycles too), it doesn't have statistical results.
Here are some 16 top diesel oils independently reviewed--
You'll have to read it to understand what the numbers mean, and why the author considers "this" or "that" oil to be better than others, but it's quite revealing, mostly showing that the newest oil standards are to be avoided because of the less-stringent wear regulations.
Really appreciate the responses, so far the truck seems to be having the same performance as with the mobil delvac. I did review the independant analysis posted by "The Josh Bear" and quite surprised to see how the valvoline rates higher than the Mobil, and was also surprised to see how low the Mobil and the Rotella were rated.

Although enlightening, you do have to keep in mind that they are testing brand new oils right off the shelf and picking the more promising looking packages. Used oil Analysis should a bit more revealing as it tests how the oils fair after a beating, not just how it "looks". I'm sure we all know how looks can be deceiving.
Also, don't forget that the "independent study" was sponsored by a cummins site. Everyone has their bias and I don't think that study is really all that different.
I mean, come on... the only oil with the cummins stamp gets the highest ratings from an "independent study" that is posted on a cummins site?
I run the non-synthetic Lucas oil, and Lucas N-S additive, w/ 1995 ps filter, she purrs like a kitten and oil temps never pass the "R" or "M", even when floored up a steep grade, egt's at 1200F, and no turbo. Or holding 120-140 km/h for like 3 hours straight on canyon/mountain roads, she just loves it.

I use shell rotela t in my semi and my 1988 E350 7.3 I get 25,000 miles on an oil change in my semi and i change it every 5,000 in my truck or every 10,000 with just a filter change I also run LUCAS oil stabilizer in the crank case and run LUCAS fuel treatment in the fuel tank it gets me another 1 1/2 to 3 more MPG I know some guys who run 30,000 on a oil change in there semi....shell is $12.50 a gallon at walmart!
I'm cheap, I run walmart brand oil. It works fine in my opinion.
Oil is one of those highly debated and highly opinionated topics. Your best bet is to do whatever research you want, look at how much you want to spend, and buy whatever you feel is worth it.
I THOUGHT THE SAME THING TILL I BOUGHT A FARMALL TRACOR THEY GUY TOLD ME HE ALSWAY USED QUAKER STATE.. I CHANGED THE OIL WITH WHAT EVER WAS ON THE SHELF 2 PISTONS FROZE UP.. YOU SHOULD STICK WITH ONE OIL,.. I ALSO HAD A 1996 CHEVY BLAZER 4X4 I ALWAYS PUT SHELL IN IT.. I WAS UNABLE TO CHANGE MY OIL DUE TO A SURGERY SO I TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALER FOR SERVICE A WEEK LATER IT SPUN A BEARING!! WHEN I DRAINED THE OIL IT LOOKED LIKE BLACK WATER...THE BULK STUFF THE USE IN DEALERSHIPS IS RECYCLED TRASH

Did you read the article? The entire second half was about used oil analysis, which would be a great deal if it didn't cost 30+ bucks a pop. You can change your oil for what, $45-$50?
I was trying to insert some actual figures into the forums, something painfully scarce for some reason. Sorry if "TurboDieselRegister" means "Cummins". I wrongly assumed it would be a place to register your turbo diesel. As I am N/A, I didn't hunt any further into the topic.
Why don't you show us the results of your UOA so we can learn something from all of your research?

No need to get defensive. I don't think you read the article as the second part talked about using UOA for extended drain intervals only. NOT the testing of each brand via UOA. You couldn't even get the price right as it was specifically mentioned in the article that a grand total of $20 per test sample was spent. But I'm sure it will vary from place to place.
As for your difficulty finding oil information...google is a great place to start. In fact, the first site I have coming up in my search is: Bob Is The Oil Guy - Forums powered by UBB.threads™
A great place to start actually, a great wealth of information exists on their forums.
Once again, going to google...take a look at the home page or the site that hosts the original article you linked...it is pretty obvious who they are representing: Turbo Diesel Register
Personally, I don't drive enough with my current job (10 minute drive) to warrant changing my oil more than once or twice a year. I suppose I could start using UOA in the future, but that would probably be when I change jobs again.
I'm not putting down the Turbo Diesel Register article, I am merely advising to keep it in perspective for what it is. A look at fresh oil for what they have to offer for additives, base oils and stocks.
I appreciate everyones opinion, and I agree that this can be a difficult topic, for me the info in the article was informative but talking to others is usually the best. The best source of Oil Performance is other people especially those that change their own Oil, seeing is sometimes believing.
My Truck is more than a Daily Driver, it is a tow truck that gets put to the test just about everyday. If there was a computer on this truck to graph the engine "RPM's" on a busy day, it would look like a giant scribble. My truck can go for Hours with out ever being turned off and experience changes from highway speed (loaded and unloaded) to fast idle (when the PTO is engaged) and occasionally normal idle.
i love and hate this debate. it comes up every so often. i'll stick by my John Deere Plus 50 II oil. was one of the better rated oil's in the turbo diesel registery analysis. not to mention that it has millions of field hours of testing done in very VERY expensive pieces of machinery, that go through much more stress than our engines, and it has held up.
i believe the analysis that the above guy is rattling on about being supported by cummins was discussed by bob is the oil guy. if im not mistaken.... who cares really. the cummins oil may be in the top group but they sure aint the only ones up there i see shell synthetic. (not a cummins product), pennzoil (also not a cummins product) and a few others that are not cummins products. the test has merit because well just making a common since observation. you get out what you put in. you put in *****. guess what your gonna get out. *****.
