OT... Tornado Outbreak, Prayers Sent
Brandon, so sorry to hear about the damage to your folks' home, but so glad that they and the rest of your family are OK.
This is the first internet service I've been able to take advantage of since Tuesday night. We (my family and neighborhood) were fortunate enough that all we sufffered was a 7-hr power outage early Wednesday morning from the first wall of straight line winds which went through. AL Power actually got our power restored before all the tornados came through (but Charter still has not re-established our internet service). All the big storms passed either a little north or a little south of us (6-10 miles in either direction). Every time one would be passing on either side, the county and city sirens would start blaring and we would get some bursts of wind and rain, but it would be over within 10 minutes each time.
I had to drive down to a plant in Selma yesterday, and was shocked to see how little damage there was in light of the way the storms were described by the forecasters while they were going through. Obviously, the ones north of us were very devastating... the AL death toll already over 200 and still expected to climb higher. Having now seen a few pictures of the damage that is north of us, I don't remember feeling this oppressive sick feeling in my stomach since watching the Twin Towers fall.
That said, all your prayers are greatly appreciated for those who have been hit so hard in our area.
Thank you.
I'll disagree with you. There might not be a way to save your house, but years ago we had a decent size tornado come close to us. That summer we bought a storm shelter. Over the years there's been a half dozen times that we've crawled down into that thing, including once where a tornado touched down in the field behind us. Might be high on a cost per use basis, but it sure is nice to have.
This has surely been a rough year, around the world, for natural disasters.
