Looks like a decent buy.

Make sure the oil pan gasket is your problem and not the rear main and expect between $150-400 in A/C repair depending on what's wrong with it.

If it sounded good, Id go for it. Doesn't look to have any rust that I have on mine.

I'll let you know right now those 4.9L oil pan gaskets are a PITA to replace! You have to jack the motor up or pull it up with a cherry picker in order to have the clearance to get it replaced. There are some people that will tell you it can bed done without jacking up the motor... Well I've done it both ways and it is a HUGE PITA without lifting the motor.

Also if it is the rear main seal and not the OP gasket you have to pull the tranny to replace it... another big PITA... Either wayt the parts will only cost you $20 or less each... it's all the work you or the shop has to do that's going to make it expensive. I'd offer $1200 cash if it runs and drives good. Meet the owner at $1300-$1400 if need be... He has obo so there is room to barter. If the oil is coming out between the engine and tranny it's the rear main seal... Remind the owner that it would cost $500 or more to have a shop fix that... if the oil is on the pan under the truck and the engine block is dry then it would be the OP gasket. If the engine block is oily then the valve cover gasket could be bad requiring you to pull the entire upper Plenum/intake... either way a oil leak from any of those locations is going to be a bare minimum of $400 at a good shop...

It's also a 5spd so if it is the rear main and you have to pull the 5spd to fix it... Well I would do the clutch and slave while you are in there. It might cost you another $100-$200 but will be well worth it so you don't have to drop the tranny any time soon again.

the 4.9L 300 I6 is a great combination for a little run around truck. 300 I6's are legendary for lasting 300,000+miles, and the m50d tranny will get you the best pulling and mpgs for a small truck...

Call around to a couple local shops and see what they would charge for a valve cover gasket, op gasket and rear main seal replacement... then when you look at the truck you'd have a good idea of what it would cost to fix. that will give you an idea of how much to barter off the truck.

sounds good. i have a mechanic that lives behind me that will hook me up, so it wont be alot compared to any shops labor rates, so thats a plus for me.

Also if you do purchase it, and it is the OP gasket I would recommend doing the OP and pickup tube while you are down there with it apart. Just good preventative maintence that's worth the extra $$$ to not have to take it apart again...

just my 0.02 cents but it's always easier to to sell a vehicle for a lower price when the buyer is there waving cash under your nose... if your 1/2 serious I'd go take a look... it's also hard to barter someone down if you aren't there to find the problems that need fixed...
