Exclamation over heating problem

I got a 1978 f150 with a 302 in it. It always wants to over heat unless im going 60 mph, could not having a fan shroud cause this? I was out mudding with it and it got realllllllly hot. So it off popped the the cap on the radiator to let the pressure out it was all air no water boiling out? It never smokes white, and when its running ive watched the radiator i dont see it bubbling. Could i have a head gasket out? Ive got a brand new water pump on it, flushed the system completely cause it was all orange rusty colored.

Yes you definately need a fan shroud to cirulate the air otherwise it will overheat.
Is it low on coolant?
Did you possibly get mud on the radiator while you were 4 wheeling?
You could also have an air pocket in the cooling system that needs to be bled out.

i checked er before i left my house and she was right up to snuff. There wasnt any mud built up in the radiator. I guess i never figured a fan shroud would matter that much?

No i meant like mud on the outside of the radiator fins, not inside the radiator. Yea you'd be suprised how much those shrouds matter. Its possible that its not your problem, but they do need to have one.
Hows the thermostat?

Well, I wonder if the radiator might be stopped up since you said the coolant looked real nasty? Might try taking it to a radiator shop and get it flushed/cleaned out really good. I've had it done to mine and it didnt cost much.
