What kind of ammunition do you recommend for the 500? I've heard of the 500's jamming like mad with 3" shells. Is this true? I'm fairly new to shotguns. I have a Ruger 10/22 .22 rifle for plinking, but I'm looking for a little more "BOOM", and skeet shooting looks like fun.
Should I look into the 500?

I have shot many different kinds of ammo and never had one jam, they might on something like a 3 1/2'' super turkey load but I don't think they would have any problem with a 3'' load. Also the 3'' and 3 1/2'' loads are pretty expensive and I shoot mostly 2 3/4" loads most of them are getting so cheap that its more expensive to handload. The only thing I would never shoot is somebody elses handloads. I have a good friend that was nearly killed when he shot a super hot load .44 magnum out of a Colt Python, the gun exploded. The load was given to him by another guy at the range who also happened to replace my friends revolver and pay for his hospital stay. I do not know the seller involved in that particular sale on gunbroker. There are a lot of other 835's and 500's and 590's on there so you can look around. Try and find something without a reserve. Also check your local pawn shops and make sure that you can have a gun checked by a qualified gunsmith before the deal is done. Mossbergs are truly great guns.

They really do out shoot most guns that are priced higher. I work for a gunsmith, but I am not one, and I have seen about every mass produced gun in the world in the shop. I also own like 50 guns so I think I am allowed to say that Mossbergs are very strong guns. I use my 500, 590, and 835 all the time for brd hunting and trap and skeet, I will never get tired of hearing that wonderful shuck-shuck.

I started out with a Remington 870 Magnum Express in the black synthetic when they first came out. When Mossberg came out with the 835 in camo, I traded the 870 for it. I was very unimpressed with the Mossberg. The safety on it sucks compared to the 870. I had the Mossberg 500 for a short while. The thing to remember with it, is it is no where near the quality of the 870. That's why they have the 835. The 500 is just their cheap model for people who only want to spend 150 bucks for a shotgun.
I now shoot a Benelli Nova for duck and goose, and shoot my Remington 1100 for dove and quail, and have a Browning Superpose 12 gauge O/U that I shoot skeet, trap, and hunt pheasant with.
I definitely recommend the 870 over the 500.
