Vapor canister?

Hi, I have been driving my 97 ranger with the code ( can't remember the number ) that states to replace the solinoid to the vapor canister. My question is why couldn't I just remove them and straight plumb. Plumb in to the canister and out to the carb. What purpose does the solinoids serve. The older models didn't have them.

The computer tells the solenoid when to purge but more importantly, it tells the solenoid when not to purge.

Thank you for the relpy. Would there be any adverse affect if I removed the solenoid and just straight plumbed it. Most cars in the past didnt have that type of system.

There are no codes that say "replace the solinoid <sic> to the vapor canister".

Get the actual fault code, then properly diagnose the fault and make the needed repair.
