I have a 64 2wd original everything. I want to restore it right and wondering where to start. Any tips would be much appertiated. Would like to put a bigger engine in other then the 292 but unsure how to fit the mounts to properly align everything. Also it has a 3 on the tree transmission. Could it take the load of a larger engine and how would I go about the mock up on a new trany and engine?
"Restoring" usually means putting it all back to original. Sounds like you may be wanting to "restomod" it. The biggest engine in the Y-blocks like your 292 is the 312. Crossmembers are available to swap in anything else such as a FE 390 or 428 or the 385 series 429 or 460. Even a small block 302 or 351W is doable. Best place to find swap info on engines/trannies is to search this forum. Good luck!
Congrats on your new project! Welcome to the madness...this site has a TON of info. The search function at the top is pretty good and can get you started. If you can't find it, just ask...that's what the site is for.
You can go to 312 easily on a Y add in some ram horns, and it will look factory.
A FE is a good motor for the swap as its a late 50's design, but a 302 is always a good choice in my book.
The 3 on the tree is pretty strong from what I have heard, but its not ready for a powerhouse. I live in Chino Hills, and in my local PYP's I have seen a few T-18's I believe which are near indestructable from what I have seen posted.
Plus they are floor shift which is easier to me. I have 3 on the tree, and its days are numbered in my truck. I am still depating which way I wanna go with my build, but its on the top of ever list as gone.
Fuel injected 302 from a fox body mustang. It will make good power even if it has 200k miles on it. Adapting a t5 would be pretty hard as it's cable driven, but there are tons of people selling AOD (Overdrive automatics) really cheap. I have an FE big block in mine but with gas at 4 dollars a gallon.. do you want 10 mpg or 15
As Hooch and the others have said, you can put pretty much any Ford V8 you like in there, mounts can be changed out or made up. Once you've decided which engine you want, and how much power you want it to produce, then that should drive which transmission you pick. Do you have a preference for manual or automatic? Be sure to pick a trans that is comfortable with the power you're planning on. If you do decide to use a Fox Mustang 5.0 SEFI you probably can use the old bellcrank clutch linkage that's probably in your truck with some modifications. I have 5.0s/T-5s in both my '64 Falcon and '66 Mustang using the original bellcrank clutch linkage. Conversion kits are made by/for Mustang parts suppliers. As your linkage is not identical to the Mustang/Falcon, so modifications would probably have to be made. Or you could go with a hydraulic clutch, which would be a bit more expensive, but give a nice modern pedal feel.
I would like a manual transmission. I don't need a hot rod just looking for a engine that sounds good. It isnt going to be a daily driver just a weekend coast hwy/ car show driver. I enjoy driving a manual transmission and really enjoy the three on the tree. I thought the 302 would be easier to find parts for and make look nice. If it becomes to much trouble and I can find parts I'll keep the y-block just not too crazy about the wrap around exhaust.
hello the trans bellhousing will bolt to the 302. justdo not use the 300 flywheel even tho it will bolt on 2 the 302. balance is wrong will vibrate cant remember for shure about engine stand think u will need a set for v8
hi i have a 65 f100, it has a 1972 302 in it with a 1998 ford truck 5 speed behind it. the stock rearend is gear a little to low so i am putting the rearend out of the 98 in soon. it uses a hyd. clutch so a master cyl. needs to be mounted also. good luck.
