is the fx4 pkg worth it?? dealer told me i cant get 3.55 elec locking axle on my f250 srw 4x4 without it? but with the tire and 18" wheel upgrade its like another $1100....is it worth it?, im sure im going to upgrade tires etc, but is it worth it for resale??
May be slightly better offroad but you will get slightly worse fuel economy. What are you planning to use your truck for?
My 350 came with skid plates but has the 3.31 so you don't need the FX4 pkg to get the skids.
I have the same question. I'm going to order 2012. Skid plates are suppose to be standard on the king ranch right? So it would just be the hill descent and stickers that would be xtra.
The bulk of that money is going for 20" wheels. Fx4 is $295, Electronic locker is $390 and if you go with 3.31 18" inch wheel all terrain upgrade is $125. So $810 if you go 3.31 elec locker with Fx4.
It is 1375 For 20" wheel $390 For 3.55 elec locker and 295 for fx4 So $2060 for a 3.55 elec locker with Fx4 I guess its a matter of personal preference
I always thought the only way to get the skid plates these days was with the package which is why I always order it. If you were to price them out from the parts department would probably be more then the package. But if they come with other packages standard I might have to reconsider. You do get the "upgraded shocks" and tires, but nothing that you couldn't get much better by going aftermarket.
Of course on a dually you don't get the hill descent control, so might be more reasons to get an FX4 if you have a SRW.
edit: I pulled up an order guide and I don't see anything about the skid plates coming standard with a KR package. It does show you can order skids plates separately on a Fleet sale only.

I built a truck on ford.com and printed it off and under standard features exterior on the king ranch skid plates are listed. But they are not listed on the lariat. Who knows? I guess I will clarify with the dealer when I order.
Yeah as I understand it the only way to get skid plates from the factory is with FX4. My 2010 was a loaded lariat 4x4 and it did not have skid plates. I am 99% sure you have to have the FX4 package for skid plates.
I am going to check up on a few things this week and if things look good my order is going in. I don't want to catch the break between 2011 and 2012 as that will put me in to later in the fall for delivery. I am hoping I can round one up before July. I don't think the changes in 2012 will be much to make a difference.

I don't have an FX4 and I have the skid plates. Was on the window sticker and in the Ford.ca "build it" website you can select them separately from the FX4 package. But I'm in Canada. We're different.
I'd agree. Though we have property up there in far western Ontario. Beautiful country - thats my favorite place in the world.
Thats probably along the same lines as block heaters being standard too. When you get out west or up north here in the States those regions have block heaters standard. Here in Ohio and on down south they aren't "standard". My 6.4 came with one, but not all diesels around here do unless you order it.
Those "white shocks" are Rancho shocks. I would expect these are far better than stock ones. I have 6 miles of a wash-boarded dirt road I use 2 times a week. I had stock shocks on a Chevy HD that were completely worn out in one summer (and the truck rattled like a school bus too). I had a Tundra with the TRD package that had Bilstein shocks which were still good after 3 years of abuse. The moral of the story is that the upgraded shocks are usually worth it. And the skid plates are a must with how I use my truck. Go with the FX4 package if you use the truck off the road.

Speaking of those Rancho shocks. I have seen a few guys reporting early failure of them. Do you think it is just a bad batch or are these a poor choice (by Ford) for the truck?
I bought the FX4 package and got the skid plates (and the stickers which are now gone). I wish (A) they were a little thicker/tougher steel and (B) there was one protecting the "plastic" oilpan.
