white smoke

i have a 1974 f100 ranger xlt with a 390 cid H code and a c6 trans.

when it is cold and i start it white smoke comes out from exaust, but when warm it doesnt do it no more, what could it be and how to fix it..

also it idles pretty rough i changed the cap rotor plugs and wires and fuel filters,,should i change points and adjust timing??? or is it worse

your valve guides might be shot and letting oil get into the combustion chambers. happened to my suzuki quadsport. if this is the case, then you'd need to pull the heads and change the guides and clean up the valve stems.

Is your radiator staying full of water? If not you may have a head gasket leak in to one or more of the cylinders.

I agree with Jim, since it is white smoke could be head gaskets. Also i think when automatic transmission fluid is burned in the engine it puts off white smoke, the way this gets to engine is through the vacum modulator when it goes bad.

Yes like rdweathers said,transmission fluid can do that. I forgot i had a station wagon do it years ago.
