Yesterday on the way to work my E4OD went into limp mode. It shudders slightly on hills when I accelerate so I’m guessing the code would be TC or clutches slipping. The tranny is original with 190,000 miles. I think it’s safe to say that I’ve gotten my money’s worth and it’s time for a rebuild. So rather than waste folks time with what’s broke diagnostics questions, I just need to find a good tranny shop before it dies completely and get it rebuilt. What questions should I ask the prospective shop and should I specify certain parts or upgrades. I only do occasional heavy towing but would like to chip it.
<O</O I called one shop and he quoted $2,200 to rebuild my case (not exchange) including steel front planetary, HD center support and 6 month warranty. +$200 for a Tugger kit.
<O</O Thanks, Joel.
Your 1997 should already have the updated center support as it came out in 1995. The addition of a cooler and a Sonnax sure cure kit would be a good start. As for the planetary gear upgrades, if you can afford them they are a great upgrade. A new or rebuilt Torque converter is a must. There are a ton of upgrades possible, its all in how much you want to spend. I am getting ready to do my 1994 and am throwing the book at it.
As far as the tugger is concern, I'm more inclined to use the Sure Cure instead as it addresses more than just the valve body.
