lookin at a 2003 v10, just wondering how the trannys are on these trucks, if they shoot spark plugs like the 5.4's and what kind of fuel mileage i can expect. its either the thirsty reliable v10 or a possibly problematic 6.0. or i can get a 7.3 stick the dealer has up there. im not sure yet. i want the 7.3 but i didnt inquire about it yet,
Ive got a 2000 v10, have not had any issues with the tranny, if it feels good you may just have the transmission fluid and filter changed. as far a puking sparks plugs goes the consensus is that if you stay with OEM or similar plugs and torque them down correctly you should be fine. My mileage is between 10-13 mpg and i personally love mine, its been very reliable. the only thing i would recommend would be to check all of the exshaust manifold studs if there are any broken it will run you 300-500 to get it fixed at a shop. it is however a good excuse to put headers on
.
My '03 V10 has almost 90K miles on it: - Plugs have been changed twice; never a problem. - The 6-speed manual, as well as the motor, have been bullet-proof. - It's a 4x4 with 4.30 gears and carries a 2000lb. camper - mileage is usually around 10mpg. - Remember the 6.0 was new for 2003, and had a bunch of problems...so if you gotta have the diesel, go with the 7.3, but first be sure you check out how smooth the V10 is.
I Have a 2000 F 250 with a V-10 and haven't had any problems with spark plugs or transmission, but as a fleet manager with several 6.0 motors go with the gas engine. The 6.0 has lots of problems with injectors and egr valves that are not cheap to repair.
