6.0 Problems

I have read several threads on this, but maybe someone has had a good experience recently.

2004 6.0 is running rough, most notably under load. It seems to lock in overdrive too soon. This is where the rough running is most noticable. It runs smooth on start up, but gets rough after about 30 seconds. It is a very noticable change at this time. No other problems. Power and gas mileage seem about the same. I know this could be almost anything, but...

I unplugged the EGR for a couple days and there was no difference. No code either, but that may be because I did not get on the highway.

The EGR is relatively clean and a couple years old. I took apart the intake from the filter to the turbo and that had very little oil in it. The pipe exiting the turbo was similar. Hose going to the MAP was not blocked that I could see, nor was it dirty. Fuel filters are only a few hundred miles and the air filter is about 2 years old and not clearly dirty.

This all started after going to my local dealer for a trans flush. I found the trans dipstick in the engine compartment after, so not sure what else they may have "done." I have no faith in them to do anything other than start replacing parts and I am not sure I trust them to do that. I would love to find a good diesel mechanic around here.

Thanks
Rob

Sounds a lot like a injector or injectors going south.

Pull the codes...... you do NOT have to have a check engine light to have codes stored.

I am hoping it is not an injector or the FICM. Trying other easier/cheaper things first. Not sure about the future of this truck, so I was hoping not to spend a lot on it now. It's been good through the first 108,000 miles, so I can't be too upset.

I used a code reader from Advanced Auto and got nothing. I know theirs are not the best code readers around, but it is the best I could think of short of taking it to the dealer. I am close to giving in to taking it to the dealer unless I can find something soon.

Thanks
Rob

The reader has to ODBII CAN compliant...... if it doesn't test CAN, it won't tell you anything.

Rob400,
I bought an Actron Pocketscan Plus last year after the check engine light came on.
It scanned 1 code for the ICP sensor. Took it to the dealer and when they scanned it, they got 2 codes for the EGR, 1 code for the cam position sensor, & the ICP code I had scanned.
It sucks, but seems like the dealers can scan more codes with their equipment than the readers we can buy.
