The C5 transmission in my hubby's '83 F100 truck will not shift into reverse anymore. After about a year of owning the truck, it started to shift pretty hard when putting it into reverse. A few months later we lost reverse all together. Everything else works fine on the transmission. It shifts very smoothly into 1 -3. He has replaced the reverse servo, drained and replaced the fluid (no metal pieces were seen in fluid) and thats about it (so far). If anyone can help figure out whats wrong, I would really, really, REALLY appreciate it. Thanks so much!
I would pull it and get it rebuilt. You can't do but so many things to one of these without pulling it out and getting into the guts. If you are going to have to go to the trouble to pull it, then it's best to go through the whole thing and rebuild it.
There may be some other options, like trying to get a good one from the junkyard, but it's a roll of the dice sometimes with that. They will usually give you a 30 day warrenty, but like I said before, it's not fun pulling these things out and putting them back in all the time.
