Ive watched a bunch of videos and love the sound of this engine with a straight pipe. Im more of an electrical custom geek.. so i dont know too much about exhaut.. Is it true it boost fuel economy? How illegal is it?(stupid question) meaning how horny will a cop get after hearing me accelerate.. or is it one of those things they ignore till you act like an idiot? Also, cab noise?
I'm not sure what your goal is but if you want to anounce to the world you have small man parts then a straight pipe is a sure bet but if you want horny cops then a rainbow sticker will do.
Jamerian, Police interaction depends on your local enforcement. Just my $0.02, straight pipe is not for me, unless I could get the added db's away from the X, maybe an exit at the right very rear corner, as I like to hear people talk without having to raise their voice. Also, my kids have some of the funniest things to say. It does add a few db's to the interior from the clips I've watched.
I've found that I personally like the sound of stock, again just my opinion. But you do what you like, doesn't hurt to try.
If you do it, please post before and after clips inside and out to demonstrate differences.
I straight piped mine and love it!!! I live in Los Angeles where the cops get ticket happy for exhaust modifications trust me i know i recieved 6 for a previous vehicle i had, since ive done it to the X no problem as it really isnt that bad IMO, EXCEPT when you first start it up! but once it warms up its fine. Here is mine warmed up'd, dont have any on a cold start up YouTube - ford excursion off road
Aster that video ,I want to throw my X in the Sand box lol.....For This video's X ,It sounds beautiful and thats how every mans Big Truck should sound.
Do what pleases you but as for inspections without the cat ,Then you will not pass but thats on you.
I had Straight pipe on my F250 but I failed my inspection so yup the Cat went back up .Still sounds awesome though.
Boost fuel economy? - Doubt you will notice any difference.
Legal? - Depends on your states laws. A lot states have regs that require a muffler. Cat is required in all 50 states although enforcement is often lax.
You will probably get tired of all the noise after while, especially if you do any kind of towing or long trips.
biervergnugen, you cancelled that idea in an instance. The truck sounds really good tha way it is... now that i think about it. Just one noise at around 2000 rpm.. a rattle.

to start with.....
The sound levels of a straight pipe w/cats is about the same as most of the loudest mufflers....it's not bad really...drone is caused by a host of other factors not related to whether it has a muffler or not. Back in 1990 (when I did mine), Ford advised that the cats absorbed about 80% of the sound (todays cats are less...I would swag at around 70%).
With regards to the back pressure link....well, the greatest amount of backpressure is created by the cats, therefor, there is really very little change by removing the muffler...at least not enough to induce any drivability issues and the amount of increased flow can easily be offset by the ECM- a design fact, nothing more nothing less.
Now with regards to being "illegal", well of course a law dog can cite you for a "modified exhaust system", but I don't think you would have any issues about being too loud unless you removed the cats and ran real "staight pipes" (in which case you're not going to do anyway). But, if a smog guy really wanted to be a super jerk, they could fail you (technically speaking) on the fact that you have a "modified exhaust system"...but the reality is, in my entire life in SoCal (los angeles), I have never had an issue related to that! (although I have gotten many a citation from CHP, PD and EPA for excessive noise on a 1974 truck that I had- isky cam- 6,000 rpm redline, 10.3:1 CR, 180 PSI cylinders, TRW al forged pistons, and 3" diameter x 28" twin pipes (no cats) straight out the back!)
But no, you should be fine! i did that with my 1990 F150, had it for 17 years, never a problem with law or smog!

I know what you mean by the rattle noise! Mine does that too right before 2,000 RPM. It did it before so i got under it and searched for it for a little bit and found that one of my clamps wasnt doing its job and i could move the pipes after the muffler over eachother with hardly any resistance so i figure that had to be it. I put a new clamp on it and it sounded a lot better. No rattle. About a month ago though i hit a pretty big bump in the road and it must have knocked something loose again in there because its doing the same exact thing My rattle has sounded like it is coming from right under the cab on the passenger side both times..
Haha thanks man! I just bought another v10 and planning on doint the same thing, but instead of just cutting the muffler off and just leaving it, route it to the back with a daul set up either at a 45 or 90
I noticed a 2mpg gain after doing my full exhaust. I think it has more to do with the Y-pipe than anything else. I run a muffler with no cat.
As far as the rattle is concerned at 2,000rpm I found mine to be the inspection plate on the transmission. The stock one is just a very thin piece of tin. I made a new one from 1/8" aluminum and seems to have fixed it.
1976and2001_250 those are some nice videos man, that sounds great. Do you any videos with the windows closed by any chance? I'm just curious to see how it sounds if i really want to hear music instaed.
