Emissions Question

I need some advice here, and honest opinions. I have a 91 F150 with a 302 / E4OD.

I have been having problems with my fuel consumption and HAD some major shifting issues. I recently replaced the VSS which fixed the shifting issue, and I am sure will eventually help with the fuel consumption. Just after replacing the VSS (within 50 miles) I blew a Head gasket (obviously NOT - RELATED).

On to my question... I am considering eliminating the smog pump and the hosing / modules connected to it. What issues / problems might I run into? Is it worth removing the system, or will it cause me more problems? How about deleting the EGR Valve and tubing? Has anyone else done this?

Well, your gonna get mixed reviews on this subject...

I would keep everything the way it is. In some cases of removig the smog equipment, you may even hinder MPG's and thus you ended back at square one. I thought about removing some othe smog stuff on mine, but I don't like removing one thing only to end up with 2 more related problems due to the delete of another piece of equipment.

If you remove the EGR valve and it's related components, you will not be removing the some of the hot combustion gases that otherwise can cause detonation in the cylinders. Some have made/bought EGR block-off plates and for those who have success with them, Good deal. I chose to simply clean the emissions equipment, replace damaged equipment, and do my part to keep our pollution problem in check. If you ever had to get that inspected in a state(Illinios), you wouldn't pass! And there are many other states.

If you decide to remove the Emissions equipment, there are several write-ups that can located/search for. You will need to use some resistors, a block-off plate for the EGR, and some other things, but it can be successfully done.

EDIT: If you are gonne replace the head gaskets, this would be a great time to Get the heads cleaned/machined, new valves or at least new valve guide seals, perhaps a new set of lifters+++!!!, new pushrods, could change rockers to 1.7's( need to check if you can depending on pushrod length and clearance to baffles in valve covers.) Conaski, Lew I think are close ot the money on this..May just need to wait and see if they know or do a search. There is so much potential just from having the heads off!!! Sorry I just get lost wit the ideas.
