its not just a matter of removing the gasser and replacing it with the deisel. You will probably have to use heavier suspension, a different trans. There is problem of the wiring harness, the fuel tank will have to be changed, and the radiator. Before the powerstroke engine, it would be somewhat easier because the 6.9 and the 7.3 were manual control injection pumps.
Good luck if you tackle this project.
I think you would want to hear from joe before you start this one.
ok - I'd been hoping someone with specific FS Ford experience would chime in, but thats not on, so here's my $0.02
I do custom fab work, and have been getting more, and more Q's about converting small trucks, and SUV's to diesels. Even with small 4, and 5 cylinders ( 3 liters and under, less than 160HP), I've had issues with engine weight, accelerated axle wear, accelerated brake wear from the weight, UJ issues, and all of the 'normal' stuff associated with engine swaps such as wiring, motor mounts etc.
The biggest one though is gearing...not sure of this on the FS Fords, but even in the Rangers, the gearing for the diesels is VERY different..set up close ratio for narrow rpm drop on shifts, and limited top speed. if this holds true on the bigger trucks, the trans, and rear ends might 'fit', but you wouldnt be very happy with the resulting driveability.
just some things to think about..like I said, I dont normally work on FS
