So I have developed a problem with my pickup that has rendered is useless and I'm thinking it is done for but I would like some of your expertise. I will try to explain it to the best of my knowledge but I am the least thing from a diesel mechanic. I was driving back from fishing the other day when I noticed my truck was acting real funny as in shifting weird and slipping real bad, so i figured the transm was on the fritz so I decided to change my Trans fluid and filter today to see if that was the problem. Ran it through all the gears while sitting still to get the fluid circulating ( not sure that is the correct way to do it) and then took it for a test drive up the road and back. While I was driving up the road I heard a real loud grind sound then the whole truck jerked forward and the boost gauge was reading "zero" and you could hear that the turbo wasn't working. At that point I got real worried so I limped back to my house to try and diagnose the problem to see if it was just a intercooler boot that blew.... it wasn't, all 6 looked perfectally fine. So I'm stuck at a stand stilling thinking that my truck is DOA now and I am really worried that that is the correct assumption. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Pull the air intake off and check the wheel to see if it is still in one piece, and how much play is there. You may be in for a turbo rebuild, or possibly a new one.
Maybe your mechanical diode in the trans is bad... I am no expert, but have read a lot of posts about the 2001 diode problems here on the forum.. I believe it affects trucks built between 7/2000 and 3/2001..
Bump for more folks to see and maybe a member lives near you that can help diagnose further and we can be of more help. These internet diagnostics/fixes are tough sometimes.
I appreciate it. I'm severely overwhelmed with this problem. When it comes to the F250 gas I know what I'm doing but since that one got totaled and I got this 7.3 I'm over my head with the whole diesel thing.
Engine starts up just fine like it doesn't have a care in the world and I can put it into gear. Its shifting a little funny still and when I get to about 40 mph its like it pulls forward alot then something has a grinding sound and it jumps down a gear. I'm sure this has been asked but how much oil goes into those I just filled it up to the "Fill line" on the dipstick but it only took 12 quarts.. is that right?
The only code it threw was the intake sensor thing because i put the boost gauge in.
And yes i checked it with the motor running.. I was kind of hoping it was something stupid instead of the whole transmission going bad. Now i have to try and find someone to buy the thing so I can go back to a old f250 i found for pretty cheap
plug your predator programmer in and go to the transmission menu and read the live data tables. If you think it is still driveable see if your torque converter is locking up at @ 35 mph. Also check in the same table if the rpm's match what you see on the dash.

When I drained mine it took 18qts, so you are a little low.
In anyones personal or professional opinion should it be acting like that with 6 quarts low? Also the oil that came out was no where near 18 quarts it was only about 10.

It may depend on the method he used to drain the fluid also. If he didn't drain the converter that is some (not sure how many quarts it holds though).
