Hello all, this is my first post on this forum and I have a very simple question.
Bear with me, Im 16, I have a 1976 F-250, this is my first truck or auto of any kind and I dont know much about it. It needs a lot of work and I plan on trying to do it myself, hopefully with your help!
So my first question, I need to put power steering fluid into the truck, and I have NO idea where it goes, maybe it sounds stupid, but if anyone can explain to me where it goes that would really help me out.
Thanks a lot, this is a very cool forum and I know I can get a lot of information from it to help me out fixing up my truck
Welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts! The Internet's leading Ford TRUCK and SUV Resource!
The very first thing you need for your truck is a repair manual!!! You can get OEM manuals on CDROM's at the Online Store or you can get a Haynes or Chiltons manual. Get at least one, but all of them is better The Haynes manual is probably best suited for a novice.
The power steering pump will be on the driver's side of the engine and the dipstick is in the tube coming up from the back of the pump housing. Looks like an upside down "J". That's also where you fill it. Be careful! It doesn't take much to go from not reading on the stick to being over full. Overfilling it won't hurt it. It'll just make a mess when the fluid warms up and overflows.
That should get you to the parts store to get a manual. (Highly recommended. Great investment.)
And welcome to FTE.
Greg
I second what others have said about a manual. Most are less than $25 and will save you that much every time you use them. I like the Haynes manual best of the ones available at the parts house. They cover the '73-'79 trucks fairly well.
You can get a complete set of shop manuals for your truck on eBay for 40 bucks or so. Lots better than the after market manuals. Just go to ebay.com and search for "1976 Ford Truck" and you will be in consumer paradise.

Welcome KC. Just a note on the power steering fluid type. The specs call for using Type F automatic transmission fluid. No, I'm not joking. Actually power steering fluid and automatic transmission fluid are very similiar in composition.
Good luck with the F-250, and you'll find good people here with good advice when you run into a problem.
Hey thanks a lot guys.
I have STP power steering fluid and I also have Mobile Multi Purpose ATF
Whick of those should I use?
Thanks for the advice on the manuals, Ill definetly have to go pick one up for myself.
I have a lot of work to start doing on this truck! I need an exaust for it, I have tons and tons of body and rust repair to do, all new brake lines and pads Im sure, gonna need a new windshield. I need all the snow to melt too!
With kids like you, and your ambitious, "do it yourself" attitude, there may be hope for this Country yet.
There's some pretty smart guys in this group and I'm sure they can help you out a lot.
Good luck with your project.
