What is this part

And do I need it? I got a whole rear-end out of a '92 with 3.55 Limited Slip that I am swapping in and I don't think it had this, though I can't remember. The jy just cut the rubber line on the '92 axle, so I need to replace the distribution block on the axle. Are these available at the usual shops?

It's a device to keep the rear brakes from locking up (can happen when there's no weight
back there).

Not totally sure but it looks like a BPV (brake proportioning valve)

Agreed. It's function was to change/adjust the brake bias depending on the load(weight) in the bed. I have a similar device on my 97 Taurus as well. In my Taurus w/ Bias Plugs installed (the car stops "flatter" - hardly any front dive) in heavy braking.

All three of you are essentially correct...

The more weight in the bed, the more brake fluid is proportioned to the rear brakes.

The less weight, or when the truck is empty, less fluid is porportioned to the rear brakes.

Keeps the rear brakes from locking up when empty.

Part of the ABS system.
