So I replaced the driver side rear axle seal and inner bearing about a month ago. I just noticed that the inside of my wheel/tire are soaked with oil again. I looked through the recalls section and didn't notice anything about axle seals but there was an item about the rear hub/rotor assembly. Has anyone else had this happen multiple times this close together or more info on the hub/rotor recall?
It is the seal the goes on the inner part of the hub/rotor between the rotor and axle tube. I don't think it was installation error because the seal was flush with the rotor and it spun freely on the bearing; but it could have been, who knows.
I know on the older 3/4ton and up trucks the new seals would come with an inner race to eliminate any wear problems with old seals on the axle housing. the whole assembly would have to be installed in the hub and than using the bearing nut driven/pressed onto the axle housing.
Did you use a seal driver when installing the new seal or did you use a hammer and just tap the seal into place working around in a circle? Sometimes the seal will get dented using a hammer and cause the seal to deform slightly in one spot causing a leak.
