I have a 90 2wd rangerwit a 2.9 with 88,000 on it. I would like to get some more power out of it without doing a engine swap what are some things I should do. Also so should I lift the trucks or should I slam it. I use the truck for work (HVACR) so lets hear your input
Thanks
Just my thoughts here so I don't intend to offend anyone.
I think lifted 2 wheel drive trucks look funny unless you go all out with the pre-runner type look.
Lowering a truck makes it pretty much worthless to haul anything.
Have you done anything to the truck yet? I'd start with better air filter/cold air intake, and a better exhaust system. Then depending how much money you have, keep going from there.
That's the kind of look you see with a lot of the high speed, off road racers like the trucks you see in the Baja 1000. Usually have big, brush gaurd looking things on the front, lots of lift for big tires with lots of wheel travel.
Wow, for $300 if the thing even runs you got a good deal. You could sell parts for a lot more than that.
Just a few things to keep an eye on. The 2.9's like to leak oil and antifreeze, so keep an eye on fluid levels. Don't let the thing overheat, or you're almost sure to warp or crack the heads. It was easy for me to remember to check the oil on my '88 since the oil leaked from the valve cover gaskets onto the exhaust and smoked.
The first thing I did was the cold air intake. I have a 58mm tb and ported intakes waiting for better weather to install. Then I've already picked out the headers and performance exhaust.
As to a prerunner (what I 'm doing to mine), I usually think of it as an offroad wannabe. With prerunner bumpers, a brush guard, nerf bars, suspension lift, 31's..... (if its done right this looks cool IMO)
you may want to take a look at your air system, ford likes to throw mofflers in the intake system so they can sacrafice power for sound. i took the air muffler out of my 94 ranger it took about 5 minutes, its free, and makes a noticible difference in speed and sound.
