i have a 2004 f-250 k.r. 6.0 with 240,000 miles. i pulled and cleaned the e.g.r. valve today. it was bad dirty. i also changed the fuel filters. my question is , i have changed my oil every 3,000 miles, and have had no engine trouble out of the normal 6.0 problem list. not even a hiccup. i was wondering about switching to synthetic oil. would that be a good idea with this many miles? i drive this truck to work and back everyday and pull my boat to the coast and pull our travel trailer . it is by no means worked hard. the second question is, i have heard about deleting the e.g.r valve and gutting the catalytic converter. can someone tell me the procedure for this? i also read one time about "exercising the engine". can you explain that to me also please. thanks for your help.
I go by the old adage" if it ain't broke don't fix it". You could change to syn. Oil with no worries.it'll actually be better for it.the best thing you could do imo is outfit it with gauges and keep an eye on everything from oil temp to coolant temps.I recently purchased a sg2 and its telling me everything I need ( and some things I don't want) to know.you've got a good one with 240 k on the clock, you're doing something right!.
+2 on the gagues. Exercising the engine means, driving it like you stole it, to move some air through the intake and get the turbo doing reps...
might consider an intake and turbo cleaning with that amount of miles unless its been done. By the time I was done, the heads came off to get it all cleaned up with all the updated parts. What did the rest of the intake look like, bad?
Mine made it to 265k with only a turbo so I was told. Only needed the heads cleaned. Perfect seal on the valves and true.
the rest of the intake was bad. i scraped out what i could and retrofitted my shop vac to where i could vaccum it out. i am a p.m. junkie, and i think that has helped with the miles. i also have a 1993 7.3 1 ton 4x4 that i use mainly for hunting and just an occasional drive to work , with 331,000 miles that has only had a water pump put on it.
