1996 Bronco XL
Does anyone know if there is some sort of elctronic component,ie; filter, amp, whatchamahoozitz, between the stereo unit and the speakers? or is it just straight wired like they did in the olden days?
The sound at different times can be just fine, or it mihgt sound like someone has over revved the speakers . rather distorted like the radio is just a hair off station.
I know its not the stereo itself since I have changhed that out and to my knowledge, the speakers are stock units.
Not 100% certain on '96 model year but my '92 is good ol' fashioned wire from the stereo to the speakers...no amp, filter, or whatchamahoozits that I have found. And I have redone the wiring to the rear speakers because the @#$%^&* who owned the Brono before me fried it.
Some packages offered by ford included an amp, and hooking up one amps high level outputs to another (aftermarket stereo hooked to factory amp) can cause damage to the stereo. One easy way to check is with the ignition off, TAP the connection of a nine volt battery to the speaker wires you're hooking up too. This will produce a poping sound from that speaker. If there is no amp you'll hear the noise, as the wires pass straight through. This won't harm your speakers and also will help locate which wires hit which speaker. Hop that helps.
If you've already hooked up an aftermarket stereo, then you can be sure there's no amp. In '87-96 trucks, there are always wires that go straight to the speakers; if there's an amp, these wires plug into it, but you can pull the amp & hook up a regular radio.
You can hook up an aftermarket to wiring harness with premium sound w/o disconnecting amp. You can also get a bypass wire to hook to the amp from Metra. I have mine hooked up with amp still and it sounds just fine. Thought about the bypass to see if I could get better sound but haven't bought bypass cable yet.
