Rear End Question

I have found on a local yardsale website this rear end that i am considering for my 56 f100, I was wondering if it will fit, this is what he emailed me,
its a ford 9 racing rear end,...dont know what it came off of... my buddy gave me some left over items he had before he left over sea.
axles are ford 9 big bearing 31 spline
rear end is 36.5" long with chevy wheel bolt pattern a fuel cooling hose adapters to prevent over heating.
no calipers....but an early ford bronco calipers should bolt up to the mounts it has.
3rd member is supposedly rebuilt but its for a 28 spline locker...which needs to be swaped for a 31 spline
i also got a the matching rotors with it, its not shown in the pics tho.

He said he was going to use this in his 1950 Mercury which has the same rear end as the 48-56 f1/f100 trucks. i wanted to get some experts opinions if you guys think that this will work for my truck? asking price is $375obo.

sorry, I don't have a yahoo.com id, so I can't look at the pics..

36 inches seems awful short for the axle housing for our trucks.

I thought our rear axles were like 61 inches wheel flange to wheel flange.. minus 4 inches each side for wheel flange to housing flange, would be 53.

The only thing that would be good for is if you wanted to Pro Street the truck. Narrow the frame around where the huge Mickey Thompson rear tires will be. Wheel tub the bed, it won't stop there. Then you need a bad *** blown engine to go with the Pro Street Theme. Cha Ching, Cha Ching.
Save the $375.

I agree with Sam. It's too narrow for your truck unless you go pro-street and tub it. I'd pass on it...

rear end

If i wanted to put a little wider tires on the truck would this matter with a rear end between 59" and 61" or should it be shorter?

The problem with rear end housings narrower than 59-61 inches is that you may have a problem with tires rubbing the bed sides. If you use something close to the original width you should have room for eight inch wheels if you want them. I'm running eight inch rear wheels on my 49 F-1.

Lots of luck with that! So far I've bought three transmissions trying to get my 49 on the road...

Thank you for your service. I'm a veteran of the Viet Nam era...

I think I may have just found a late 70s lincoln 9 inch, does anyone have any pros or cons for this rear end? Was installation hard? I read that it has disc brakes and parts are hard to come by for them.

you want UP to 72.. otherwise the later year are too wide

"77-81 Lincoln Versailles 58" (probably has disc brakes)

did you mean not wide enough? I got this off of this forum that was in the differential swap article. it says its close but i dont know if that means it will work or not.

The Versailles rear may be okay...just depends on your wheel selection; but, I have also heard about parts being scarce for them so if you go that route make sure everything's there. IMHO, rear disc brakes are a wasted effort on a pickup anyway since the rear end is so light.
