How can you tell if an injector tube is bad without tearing down the heads?

Got a diagnosis during a EGR cooler replacement that a injector tube was bad. Need to know if I am being snowed!

only way i knew was that the truck was overheating and i had oil in my coolant. not sure if that was the cause of oil in the coolant or if it was the oil cooler that went bad because both happened at the same time. another way to find out is check the oil for fuel and check the coolant for fuel. if an injector tube is cracked its going to leak into one of those to areas

Thnks for the reply. That atleast verifies that the injector tube exists! I am not sure what caused it to crack or te symptom the tech is seeing. Bad part is he already had the engine back together from replacing the egr cooler so now it has to be broke down again! Does it make sense to replace more parts whle he is in ther or just go with the broken parts?

Yes the tubes do exist. I rebuilt the top end of mine. Head studs/everything. The tubes run from the rear center of the head down to the block. Tubes usually are one time use only. If he pulled them and reinstalled he may have cracked one. They usually bend on removal. Mine did and had to go to ford to get new ones. From what I experienced from my tear down if this tube was leaking you would have a drop in high pressure oil for your injectors which should cause a misfire. The dealer to my knowledge is the only one who has the capability of testing the HPOP systems for leaks. To change this tube is pretty easy. If I did it it would take roughly 4 hours to change.

Actually, what he is telling me is that there is still wate gtting to the cylinder. He is not sure whether it is a cracked injector tube or head gasket or what. He originally went in through the topnw he is planning to remove the cab to get to the heads better.

you cant remove injector tubes from what i know. they are built into the head and i had to replace my head because one was cracked. if it is cracked be prepared to buy a head. the head alone is 1500 from ford and then you need to have it surfaced or atleast checked for flatness. and while one side is off might as well do the other side and put studs in!!!
