Should have some answers on 4-21 if the dealer is smart enough to figure this thing out. With my being able to isolate the issue to the vacuum system and the possibilities if that system fails, (vacuum assist brakes for instance) this has the potential to be a dangerous problem.

Update:

Took the truck to the dealer today for a preliminary assessment. The service manager, a service writer and a diesel tech all listened to the noise. Here's my take:

The service manager wanted to listen to a new truck to see if it made the same noise.

The service writer did not even know that the 2011 F250 had a vacuum boost brake system.

The diesel tech's first words out of his mouth was "oh, that's normal". Then admitted that every issue with a 2011 is 'new' and he had not seen this one, so, they (techs) are still in the learning curve.

I DON"T think so!

A $60k truck shouldn't be making any noise that you can hear from 50 feet away!

To the dealers credit, the service manager agreed the noise needed a solution and scheduled an appointment next week for a full diagnose/repair.

So, will drop the truck off next week; have my fingers crossed.

That's not normal, but you know that already.

update:

Another owner with the same exact noise showed up on one of the 'other' sites. His truck is in the shop now and the techs were instructed to find the noise source with a stethoscope and get back with the factory guys.

Interesting side bar. This other truck with the 'noise' was purchased from a Ford dealer used with ~16K miles. The owner says it has made the noise from the day he got it home. He thought it might be a normal noise. Looks like the dealer sold the truck with the noise happening. They must have not known that noise was abnormal??

Clearly, there is not a very big knowledge base on these trucks. Just not many things going wrong, so no one knows what 'normal' really is.

I'm working with my dealer and have been promised that they will make me happy. I'm good with that!

Thanks for the update Jammer. Keep us informed. Strange sound, hopefully not a strange solution!

Wednesday, May 4:

Dropped truck off this morning. SM says his tech has found some other trucks with a similar failure.

Will update when I have more information.

My truck isn't in the garage often but noticed this type of sound under my hood over the weekend prior to changing the air filter.
However, not anywhere near as loud as your truck.
It isn't loud enough to concern me but it certainly caught my attention after I shut down the truck and walked to the front.
Your post instantly came to my mind.
I can't hear it outside where the truck is most of the time exept during storms (not that putting it inside would have saved it from the 20+ tornados last week but it made me feel better at the time).

Sounds like a muffled hot-wheels sized generator under there.
I've become used to the other noises; like the transmission beep which occurs if the key is nearby or not.

Anyways, still interested in the outcome of your truck.

I would certainly take the truck in and, at the very least, have the issue documented.
There may be many more trucks with this issue and are being dismissed as 'normal'.
Curious; how many miles on your truck? The noise showed up at about 18.5K on my truck.

14,900 ish.
Was at 14,702 over the weekend when I noticed.
It could have been doing it for awhile but I wouldn't have known.

The noises that show up with these trucks crack me up.

Thursday May 5 update:

Ford gave me my truck back today, un-repaired.

Apparently the waste gate solenoid is the issue. At this time the part is on nation wide back order with no eta date being given. The SM thinks that the part is either being re-engineered or is undergoing a vendor change. In either case, Ford R&D is most likely involved.

Ford hot line does not believe that this part failure will affect the drive-ability or fuel mileage of the truck.

hmmm, could be the explanation for the lousy mileage I get when towing.
