Okay here is the deal. Just rebuilt the motor and placed everything back and started it up...worked first time.
But then the engine slowly started to lose power and I thought it was just getting hot. But I haven't been able to start it since.
I cranked it for 5-10 sec's and I notice smoke coming from the ground wires around alternator and the ground connected to the horn. I didn't notice this during the engine start-up due to the usual excess oil being burned.
Now, what causes the negative ground to smoke? The battery is negative grounded correctly although I might replace the negative cable. The alternator is wired correctly, in fact it has to have been or else the motor never would of started in first place.
Any ideas? Do you think the coil needs replacing after the loss of power due to the smoking of wires? Loss of spark to plugs even to start it now.... Although if so I am not going to start replacing things until I know why the grounds smoke? Appreciate anything...weekend hobby here... jim
One thing that comes to mind is that the starter is getting current thru some of the smaller ground wires. Be sure the block is well connected to the battery - terminal.
Your alternator could be failed and the truck would still start. Your battery would just not be re-charged.
Okay...I fixed my smoking grounds portion by moving the ground from the engine wall to the engine. Amazing that would have that much effect! Thanks guys...
Now the motor won't start. I have a new starter, solinoid, coil, distributor, plugs and wires, rebuilt carb, etc... Any suggestions. Crank turns nicely, just won't kick over.
I just got done rebuilding the motor and putting it all back. It did start about 2 weeks ago and slowly died away, probably from having the negative ground to the engine wall rather then engine. But why won't it start now. I am thinking carb? Vacuum hose looks good, tightened carb down to 25 torque but still see some gas coming out of carb base...may have to replace gasket. Any ideas? Thanks in advance jim
If you had the battery ground on the firewall instead of the engine you may have fried some of the small grounds (ignition circuit?) from carrying the starter current. Remember, the engine is mounted on rubber and the battery cables are thick for a reason. The starter draws a lot of current.
Do you have spark?
